Mortimer History Society

We are The Mortimer History Society. The society for everyone interested in the medieval Mortimers of Wigmore and the history of the Welsh Marches.
An active and growing society, we currently have up to 450 members worldwide. Our busy programme of local events includes conferences and lectures on a broad range of subjects by top speakers.
As well as the Mortimers, and their significance on the national stage, we focus attention on the Marcher lordships and their relationships with both the native Welsh and the English crown. Our schedule of talks covers many aspects of medieval life, including castles, religion, the medieval legal system, chronicles, architecture and literature.
We have a group of members learning to decipher medieval documents, and others with a special interest in heraldry.
Our colourful magazine Mortimer Matters is emailed to members quarterly, and we also produce the annual Mortimer Journal which contains articles of a more-academic nature.
Each year we arrange local field trips and the Society has already spawned a number of books, including On the Trail of the Mortimers which is a guide to Mortimer-related sites in Ludlow and North Herefordshire. Volume 1 of a major three-volume history of the Marcher lordships has already been published.
We also provide an interesting local history programme for primary schools in ‘Mortimer’ country, which involves specialist talks to young people and an exciting ‘living history’ day at Ludlow castle.
Membership to The Mortimer History Society is inexpensive. To find out more please visit our website.
