A Modern-Day Schubertiad to include Schubert’s great String Quintet and a new work by Derek Smith

A Modern-Day Schubertiad
to include Schubert’s great String Quintet and
a new work by Derek Smith
The Lion Ballroom, Leominster
Saturday 18 June 2022 at 4pm
Coull Quartet with William Schofield (cello)
Schubert adored making music in intimate settings – people’s homes, coffee houses, small assembly rooms – where he would gather a small audience to showcase his new compositions and sometimes those of other composers and enjoy being immersed in ‘the arts’. Invariably, wine and Viennese sweetmeats would be served. Such gatherings were called ‘Schubertiads’. The Lion Ballroom is one such intimate venue that, no doubt, Schubert would have loved. This concert will feature two of his finest works – his Quartettsatz and his great String Quintet alongside the première of a String Quintet by composer and arranger Derek Smith.
This is a full-length concert with almost 90 minutes of music.

Quartettsatz in C minor D703 Schubert
String Quintet (première) Derek Smith
String Quintet in C D956 Schubert

Tickets at £16 (to include a glass of wine/grape juice and Viennese sweetmeats)
